(Un)arranged marriage

I am reading the book (Un)arranged marriage by the author Bali rai. Bali Rai is an young author from Leicester in England. This is his first book. I believe the theme in this book is about culture and how other cultures understand love.

The main character in this book is Manjit. He lives in Leicester, just like the author. His family is from india and are very strict about their culture and tradition, they are punjabi's. Manjit do not like his family very much. His mother is very quiet and his father is very strict. He shows that by beating his sons and he want them to do what he say - so they won't ruin the familys reputation. Manjit have two brother and their wifes living under the same roof, because it is a tradition. His brothers had a marriage at the age of seventeen and they say that Manjit is going to get married in that age to, but he really do not want to. But it is nothing he can do, if he do not get married he will ruin the familys reputation and be an outcast of the family.

He sees himself as the smart one in the family and he want to keep up studying after he is seventeen, but his family do not care about education. He also want to see the world , date supermodels, write a bestseller and become the first asian popstar. He do not want to marry a girl he do not know, who he just have seen a photo of. And there is Lisa to think of too, his girlfriend.

The first impression i got from Manjit in this book was that he was a little shy and lika a rebel in his family. He was the different one in his strict family. I would not like to live in that kind of family, because he describe how he never get any privacy and that he is taken beat from his father. I feel sorry for him. He's very stuck in a life that he do not want to live, he want to break free, but he can not do that,  it is impossible.

Good job Elin! You have written a thorough and analytical description of the characters. Perhaps you could try to challenge yourself even more next time and include some quotes from the book to support your arguments. When it comes to grammar you need to think about the verbs: When do you need an extra -s (he,she,it) and also think about the difference between have/has, for example "Manjit has two brothers and their wives live under the same roof..." Keep up the good work and have a nice weekend! /Teresa
